Registration Deadline: Friday, September 27, 2019

This convening provides an opportunity to explore the concepts of growth mindset and belonging with your colleagues from across the system, with a focus on how these concepts can be used inside and outside of the classroom to support student learning and close equity gaps within the CSU.

Why focus on growth mindset and sense of belonging?

A growing body of literature explores the ways that social emotional supports, including fostering growth mindset and sense of belonging, can potentially help students navigate the transition into college and maintain success across their educational trajectory. These learning mindsets are increasingly popular frames for helping both students and institutions shift their thinking around academic success. This convening will explore the concepts of growth mindset and belonging within a framework of creating motivating academic and nonacademic experiences for all students. The convening will also offer participants an opportunity to mutually engage and determine ways to change institutional policies and practices to support students’ social emotional needs. We will pay particular attention to ways growth mindset and belonging can be used inside and outside of the classroom to support student learning and close equity gaps within the CSU.

Intended Learning Outcomes

  • Equity. Consider ways (in)equity manifests on campus.
  • Knowledge. Explore evidence around how growth mindset and sense of belonging can advance equitable student success efforts on campus; and share successes and challenges in fostering growth mindset and sense of belonging.
  • Relationships. Build relationships with colleagues at your campus and from across the CSU who are involved in campus-level efforts promoting equitable student success.

Who Should Attend?

We invite individuals and small groups from each campus who want to engage with CSU colleagues around supporting students’ social emotional needs. Network convenings are designed to benefit colleagues in the “middle” of our system – faculty, staff, institutional researchers, department chairs, and the like. Students are also welcome to participate.
